Padilla’s menu is a rich tapestry of classic dishes that reflect the rich culinary heritage of New Mexico. Highlights include their perfectly fluffy sopaipillas—light, warm pillows of fried bread served alongside honey and butter, an irresistible combination that customers fondly recall as the perfect way to "round off" their meal. The Thursday Special Carnitas is a standout, boasting tender, savory pork slow-cooked to perfection, complemented by both red and green chilies for a balanced, fiery kick.
For those craving a taste of true local fare, the Meat and Bean Stuffed Sopapilla Plate with Red Chile offers an explosion of flavor, marrying hearty, slow-cooked meats with the smoky depth of red chile. The Blue Corn Enchilada Dinner is another must-try, showcasing blue corn tortillas filled with savory fillings and drenched in rich red or green chile sauces that linger lovingly on the palate. Vegetarians can delight in dishes like Huevos Rancheros Green and Cheese Enchilada Plates that remain true to the kitchen’s genuine style and spice.
The menus also boast crowd-pleasers such as hearty combos featuring tacos, tamales, burritos, and enchiladas — each served with classic sides like beans, rice, and freshly made chips and salsa, the latter of which customers rave is "crisp and flavorful," the perfect prelude to the main courses.
Diners consistently praise the red chile sauce, with one loyal patron describing it as "spectacular" and "incredible," a sentiment echoed by many who find the heat and smokiness expertly balanced to satisfy both chile novices and aficionados alike. Another favorite is the Carne Adovada Burrito Plate with All Beans, a comforting, robust dish that embodies the heart of New Mexican cooking.
Padilla’s is also renowned for its attentive and friendly service. Guests make note of the servers’ genuine hospitality — quick to offer recommendations, attentive to water refills, and adept at managing a busy dining room with ease and grace. It’s clear that the staff’s commitment adds a personal touch that enhances the overall dining experience.
One essential detail to keep in mind: Padilla’s Mexican Kitchen operates as a cash-only establishment. While this might require a little extra preparation, regulars and newcomers alike agree it’s well worth the effort for the opportunity to experience some of Albuquerque’s finest Mexican cuisine.

The food is absolutely amazing. The red chili is spectacular and the flavor is just incredible. The burrito with green chilies was 10/10
We did not notice it was cash only--we lucked out and had some cash (not always a given). The service was excellent. Our main server came over right away and advised us to order quickly ahead of a huge table next to us that would have delayed our meal, and at least two other servers came by regularly to offer water refills and ask if we needed anything. The food was very good, BUT as a vegetarian, noticing there was meat in the red sauce, without warning, was disconcerting. Rather than complain, we kind of scraped it off, but yikes. The sopapillas were terrific.
Its a solid New Mexican food staple that we all love. The quality and authentic taste is makes us locals always go back.
We went on Thursday because their online menu shows Thursdays special to be Carnitas. When we arrived the parking lot was packed and the restaurant was very busy. We only had to wait about seven minutes for a table, so not bad considering how busy they were. Andreas was our server and he was awesome!! He made a few recommendations and I ended up going with the blue corn enchiladas with carnitas and the hubby ordered cheese enchiladas with a side of the red chili. To say that the food was GREAT is an understatement. We checked in with Lawrence at the door and later he came and sat at our table for a few minutes to make sure everything was good. He told us this is a family owned restaurant and they have been open since 1977. The quality of the food and the staff explains why they have been so successful. When we are back in Albuquerque we will definitely be coming back to Padilla's. Be sure to bring cash as they don’t take credit or debt cards. Prices are more than reasonable.
Felt very homey, we had a great waitress. The food tasted very good (I took a few bites before taking a picture) and it came out hot! (Which is always good) the red chile was out of this world! Please remember they do not take cards they are a cash only business. 10/10
Had their Wednesday special - super good - highly recommend this place - great food at great prices and fast, friendly service
